| Refreshingly Complete! This is a fantastic look at American history; it doesn't gloss over anything, and quite importantly gives you reasons WHY individuals and nations acted as they did. It sets not only stage for the telling of the American story, but gives insight into how America fit into the world at the time of her historic events. This book is well researched and corrects a lot of misconceptions that most of us might have - such as Columbus sailing to America to prove the world round (it was already believed the world was round, people just didn't know its exact circumference). If you're a student, a homeschooling family looking for a good resource or someone interested in the hows and whys of American history, I cannot recommend this and its second installation enough.
Can't wait to read Vol IIBennett does a great job capturing your imagination and helping you to relive the most vital parts of America's great past. No stone seems to be unturned, no ego is stoked without also being bruised, and the occasional ugliness of man is very clear but in the end the story of our country is there to enjoy.
Knowing Bennett's writing style I was not apprehensive in the least to pick up this book. He is witty and engaging and you will thirst for more and more. Yes there are times where I wish there were more to a particular story but this is history so all I have to do is look it up and I'm sure there are plenty of books on the topic...just none as well written as Bennett's.
What is amazing is that he had the ability to compress hundreds of years of American history into 1 book...what will be intriguing is reading the next one that only encompasses the last 90+ years!!
A crash course in American historyThe book gives a decent overview of pre WW1 American history. As it covers a long period and a lot of historic events the analysis is somewhat superficial.
The greatest drawbacks are the partisan discussion of politics and attempts to link political players from the 19th century to today's parties.
Great Book, Great ConditionThis was a great way to get the book I wanted in great condition for less money.
Everyone's Favorite History BookReading this book is like unrolling a scroll and discovering it is actually a treasure map. The more you read, the more you realize that this country is absolutely unique. America is the treasure and too valuable to toss off as a failed experiment. There is no other like it.

Join Bill Bennett for the great adventure. America's teacher will lead you on a voyage of discovery. What others are saying: "William J. Bennett artfully and subtly makes connections between our past and current events, reminding us ... that we are intimately and immediately connected to the extraordinary Americans who have bestowed upon us our great heritage.... [T]he importance of America: The Last Best Hope probably exceeds anything Dr. Bennett has ever written, and it is more elegantly crafted and eminently readable than any comprehensive work of history I've read in a very long time. It's silly to compare great works of history to great novels, but this book truly is a page-turner.... Prepare to have your faith in, hope for, and love of America renewed." -Brad Miner, American Compass "The Role of history is to inform, inspire, and sometimes provoke us, which is why Bill Bennett's wonderfully readable book is so important. He puts our nation's triumphs, along with its lapses, into the context of a narrative about the progress of freedom. Every now and then it's useful to be reminded that we are a fortunate people, blessed with generations of leaders who repeatedly renewed the meaning of America." -Walter Isaacson, Benjamin Franklin: An American Life "For too long Americans have been looking for a history of our country that tells the story of America's triumphs as well as its tragedies. Now Bill Bennett has come forward with America: The Last Best Hope, which tells the story-fairly and fully-from 1492 to 1914. Americans who have been reading recent biographies of the Founding Fathers will love this book." -Michael Barone, US News & World Report "Bill Bennett's book will stand as perhaps the most important addition to American scholarship at this, the start of the new century. For the past fifty years American historians have either distorted American history or reduced it to a mess of boring indictments of our cultural and political heritage. With this book Bennett offers to Americans young and old an exciting and enjoyable history of what makes America the greatest nation on earth. -Brian Kennedy, president, The Claremont Institute
