A brave book with richly illustrated characters"The bird that would soar above the level plain of tradition and prejudice must have strong wings." ~Kate Chopin; The Awakening
All I could think about as I was reading this book is this author sure is brave. A white woman writing a book about black maids and prejudice in the heart of Mississippi just seemed risky to me. How can a white person possibly relate to what a black person experienced in the sixties? And yet Kathryn Stockett pulls it off beautifully.
The Help is definitely a character driven book. All the principal characters are richly illustrated and memorable. The book follows two black maids, Aibileen and Minny who have worked their whole lives serving white families. There are ups and downs to the job but in many ways the women are treated like slaves. It is also about a white woman named Skeeter, who loves to write and seems to be the only white person that notices the injustices the black maids face on a daily basis. Miss Hilly, is the antihero and is just a terrible person. I have to imagine that the actresses in Hollywood will be clamoring for that part as she is the most sinister villain in recent history. Who knew that a housewife could be so conniving?
Skeeter works with Aibileen, Minny, and other maids to document the life of a black maid in Mississippi. The stories they share are dangerous and ultimately could be life threatening if they are discovered to be the source. There is a sense of dread that builds and builds throughout the book. The book is full of mysteries that slowly unravel and I found it hard to put down. I was surprised that I enjoyed this book so much since nearly all the characters are women and for the most part the men are all terrible or just in the background. I am not the target audience but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the book.
I was born in the mid-seventies and grew up for the most part in the Kansas City area and I just haven't witnessed prejudice first hand. I can't believe this story took place just a decade before my birth. I recognize that this book is fiction and I may be naive but I am sure that many real events took place that were a lot worse than some of the things that took place in this book. The author does a great job of weaving in actual civil liberty events that were occurring as the fictional story progresses. It is hard for me to fathom such hatred and ignorance. I recognize that prejudice exists today, especially in certain pockets of the country, but the fact that we have an African-American president shows that we have come a long way as a society in the last 50 years. Hopefully things continue to improve. Read more...

Surprisingly good bookI like the guy. When I see him on interviews he comes across as a logical, balanced person. The Screaming Zombies hate him with a passion, which is another positive, in my mind. I mean, someone that despised by insane people probably is doing something right, right? Still, I didn't expect much when I was given a copy of the book as a gift.
But the book is terrific, with a tremendous level of detail and fact-checking that backs up his point of view. Not that it will cut any slack with with Screaming Zombies. They are immune to logic and fact.
But on a certain level they ARE entertaining to watch, I guess. Read more...

cautionI always read customer reviews before purchasing a book, and when I ordered this one the reviews were all 5 star. I thought this book was going to change my life! I was very disappointed....
First, as with many "self-help" books, the author takes about 10 pages to say what could have been said in 1 page. After all, self-help "magazines" don't sell and make money--you have to stretch your material out into book format. I found myself reading the same information over, and over, and over again.
Second, I found some of the advice to be a little impractical. I purchased this book because I'm having a difficult time getting motivated to lose weight. I know I need to eat right and exercise, but I'm just so tired and feel so blah that I just haven't been able to do it. So Dr. Amen's premise appealed to me--it's not my lack of willpower, it's a problem in my brain. If I just follow his advice, my brain will be "fixed" and I'll be eating all the right foods, in the right amounts, and working out like crazy. Well, a large part of his advice is to eat right and exercise. Not how to get there, just to do it and my brain will start getting "fixed." Hmmmm.....
Third, Dr. Amen suggests a number of supplements that will help brain function. Upon researching some of these supplements, I find that many have not been approved by the FDA. Some have been linked to rather serious side effects, and other medical experts caution that they should not be taken without further research. Personally, I don't want to be a guinea pig. Unless there is overwhelming support from the medical community that indicates a supplement is safe to ingest, I'm not going to put it into my body.
I feel this book was a complete waste of my time and money because I didn't learn a thing. If you don't already know that lack of exercise, poor diet, and negative thinking has a negative effect on your brain, then you could probably benefit from this book. But if you know those things, just not how to implement them, you may want to look elsewhere. Read more...

The Book with the Strange TitleI finished this book last month, but wanted to reflect a bit before writing this review. Sure enough, the book really stayed with me, so here I am at my keyboard recommending it to others. What I loved about this book was its multilayered and original (even quirky) plot. This is an unconventional book, and as I was reading along, I wasn't sure where it would go; in fact, I wasn't even sure who the protagonist was. There's a whodunit in here, but that's not really the book's focus or (in my opinion) its strength. Rather, the real pleasure of this book is just letting it carry you along in a journey through some unusual (but still believable) lives. I'm glad I didn't judge this book by its title, which seems just as quirky as everything else in the book (although I suspect the significance of the title may become clearer once I read the second and third books in the series, which I now intend to do). No matter how you feel about tattoos, don't let the title turn you off; this book quickly draws you in and doesn't let you down. And even though this offbeat Swedish thriller is a runaway bestseller, it still makes you feel kind of cool (the way that seeing the movie "Diva" felt back in the 80s). Read more...
