Great for Special Vacations!I bought this for my new husband to take on our honeymoon to Hawaii for our wet/underwater adventures. It worked great! But first, the bad/needs improvement issues: There was only one problem that we had, after shooting some video, the system locked up and the recording seemed as if it wouldn't stop. After a hard reboot (removing the battery to turn off, then restarting it), it worked fine and all the pics and video were still there. Of course, if you were underwater at the time something like this happened, it would be a much bigger problem. But, we used this device for the entire trip, and that was the only problem we had. The other thing that Kodak could improve upon is to add a tightener to the strap for the camera. It's great they included a strap, but it is still quite loose, and if you are using the camera on a boat or while snorkeling like we were, it is most likely going to slip off your wrist at some point. We solved this problem by creating our own strap tightener with a hair band, however it would be nice if Kodak would address this easy to fix (and most likely extremely cheap to fix) issue.
That being said, the video quality is fantastic with this little guy. You DO have to be aware of how fast you are moving the camera while shooting a video, you have to keep it at a pretty slow, steady motion, but that is really to be expected, not sure why anyone would be surprised about that. The camera also takes really great outdoor and underwater still pictures. I would highly recommend this purchase to anyone who wants to capture really special trips. This is not a camera for every day usage (unless you happen to be underwater every day), but it is a must have for wet or underwater adventures!!! Read more...

Sweet Little Pocket Video Camera!I am loving my refurbished Kodak zi8! I took it to the Grand Canyon where I used it for the first time. Admittedly, I hadn't read the instructions prior to use (I received it and got on the plane), I found it somewhat difficult to navigate upon first use. I suggest reading the instruction manual to learn how to use it first! However, once I grasped the concept, I was able to easily use it to take fantastic video pictures. It also takes stills. It has its own USB cable tucked away, so it's simple to upload video. The quality, even on the low settings, is excellent! It has image stabilization, too, a great feature to prevent shaky video. I bought my camera refurbished for well under $100 and it's the way to go! My biggest complaint is that, as CNET review states, it shows fingerprints all over the camera, leaves smudges. But that's a very minor con. It's light weight, great battery life, and well worth the purchase (does HDMI, too)!! Love it. It is just what I wanted in a small, portable, hand held video camera. Sometimes, you don't even get what you pay forThe firmware that currently comes with these cameras, version 1.03, is broken and will not record more than 4GB of data to at least some SDHC cards even if more space is available. (Not 4GB per video which is a normal filesystem limitation, but 4GB TOTAL.) In fact, not only will it refuse to record more than 4GB, once you reach this limit the controls lock up and the only way to reset the camera is to remove the battery. This defective firmware has been available for over 4 months, and there is no way to downgrade to 1.02 (which did not have this issue). I use a Transcend 8GB Class 6 card which works fine in other devices; others have reported issues with 16GB and 32GB cards.
Trying to contact Kodak technical support for this camera is also next to impossible unless you are living in the past. Their live chat only works on old versions of Firefox or IE (no Safari, no Chrome, no Firefox 4). Several of the links on their site to the Contact Us page are broken. Once you finally find their feedback form, it too is busted and will only display a list of their non-video digital cameras when you select "Digital Video Camera", so you can't get help there unless you intentionally choose the wrong camera model.
Beyond that, the waterproofing works as advertised, and picture quality is about what you would expect from a really cheap pocket cam--which is to say, extremely over-compressed. At an average bitrate of just 12Mbps (Main@L4.2), you will experience substantial loss of picture detail. There is no way to change the bitrate the camera uses. The same bitrate is used for all shooting modes, so you might think to switch to 720p to improve the picture quality, but the built-in resizer is so horrible that it makes the video look WORSE (like badly upconverted SD footage). That said, at 1080p, I doubt the picture quality is any worse than other cameras in the price range, especially since they all seem to use the same Ambarella AVC encoder.
The CMOS sensor is slow even when set to 60fps mode, so there is a fair amount of wobble caused by the rolling shutter. Low light performance is decent given the sensor size. There is no macro focus, so pay attention to the minimum focal length. The camera gets warm when it is on for more than about 10 minutes. The digital zoom cannot be disabled, but thanks to the waterproofing it is harder to activate than on a Flip.
If Kodak releases a newer firmware that fixes the 4GB recording issue, this would be a solid four-star budget HD video camera. With no ability to record more than an hour at a time, however, I would strongly recommend finding a less buggy alternative (or expect to change cards a lot and plan accordingly). Read more...

Pretty goodI just got my flip slideHD last week and am still experimenting with it a bit so i'll be updating this review as time goes by. I'm only giving it 3 stars for now because:
1. When you make videos at night all the lights have a large halo around them
2. The zoom function is easy enough to use but the zoom range is quite limited compared to other cameras
3. Although I knew that the flip would have simple / limited controls, I was surprised at just how limited they are. From that perspective you could almost think of this as a child's camera (if it wasn't for the price and the fact that it's an HD camera).
4. When you email a video via the flip software to someone, they get a link with your video. The problem is that the quality of the image is so reduced that it pretty much defies the purposed of having an HD camera.
More updates to come... Read more...

Trade-offs and compromises: choose carefully This camera is full of trade-offs: great features which are often crippled by poor implementation. I very nearly returned it, but ultimately it is getting the job done: taking pictures and videos of my 2 year-old and newborn for online viewing by friends and family. Consider very carefully how you plan to use this camera before buying.
The big plus is its low-light performance. It may be one of the only inexpensive HD camera's on the market which takes decent pictures under indoor lighting. If you plan to take videos indoors or at night, you'll find that you have very little choice even at twice the price.
Other pluses: acceptable performance as a still camera, a good flash, a remote control, a 37mm threaded lens for adapters and filters, and manual controls for just about everything.
The big minus is a complete lack of image stabilization. Electronic image stabilization is listed as a feature, and there is a setting to turn it on and off. But if it does anything at all, turning stabilization on just makes the picture more jittery. If you don't have a steady hand or plan to do a lot of zooming, this is NOT the camera for you. If you are thinking about using stabilization software, be warned: the CMOS sensor uses a "rolling-shutter" (google it) which is incompatible with software stabilization and makes fast pans look distorted.
Other minuses: the record/pause and still-photo buttons are at the top of the camera-back requiring a long thumb to reach. If you have small hands, you will not be able to operate the camera one-handed. Given the lack of image stabilization, this is will be a deal-breaker for some. I will have to buy a second still camera for my wife. The still-photo quality is poor in all modes except the 8 megapixel 4:3 size, where it is surprisingly good. But in that mode the display is vertically cropped until you press the photo button, making it difficult to line up shots. The face-tracking feature does not work: it often chooses chairs over people. The multi-point auto-focus is easily confused. The automatic white-balance is easily confused and seems to switch abruptly between presets instead of performing true, continuous adjustments. The short-cut controls are limited to only few oddly-chosen features. Many of the short-cut controls require secondary input (like adjusting the exposure up and down) which then conflict with other short-cuts making it impossible to adjust the settings more than once.
If your main goal is to produce online video for friends and family, then the video quality is very good: better than what you can get on cameras that cost twice as much. For computer displays you do NOT want any interlacing and 60 fps is a waste, so the availability of a 30p settings is critical. Many cameras do not have that. The video quality at this camera's 1080/60p setting is not noticeably better than at its 720/30p setting. If you are planning to shoot sports or other fast motion, this is probably not the camera for you: the rolling-shutter CMOS chip causes severe distortion with fast-motion or pans.
The viewing angle is a bit narrow if you need to get close to your subjects, such as in a small room. But it is not nearly as bad as many consumer-grade camcorders. (The 37mm lens front is threaded, so you can attach a wide-angle adapter. Those can be purchased online for as little as $40, though the cheap ones produce a lot of lens-flares.)
On the whole, the camera has a huge list of features, many of which you won't find on other camera's at this price point. But many of those features are crippled by poor design, requiring work-arounds and compromises. I suspect that a great many of the camera's problems could be fixed with a firmware update, especially the lack of image stabilization. But as far as I know there hasn't been one yet and there may never be one.
I spent many hours trying to find a camera that could take decent indoor video suitable for online viewing and was really shocked at how few choices there were for under $500. This is pretty much it at the moment, so if that's what you need, and you don't have small hands, then this camera may work for you. But if you are looking at that huge list of features and thinking "how can they do all that for so cheap?", the answer is: they didn't. You can make it work, but you have to work at it. Read more...
